ROV Design for Reef Health Monitoring in Australia

This summer, I interned at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, developing a towed ROV that monitors reef health. Along with one other student, we used feedback from the first design iteration to develop the second generation with enhanced features. This process involved learning Autodesk Inventor, repeating through design and feedback cycles, and creating a final product with an accompanying write-up. I also spent a week on Heron Island with the Technology Development team testing various technologies in the field alongside rangers from the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service, who will be implementing the devices. This internship gave me an idea of what a technology design work environment looks like in regards to designing for machining and working with a client to develop a product, as well as introducing me to various potential career paths.
