Effect of Neoprene Thickness on the Cooling Rate of a Submerged Object
Location
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Date
Fall 2023
Project type
Experimental Design
This project was conducted for MIT's "Measurement and Instrumentation" class, where I performed a semester-long experiment and went through the process of experiment design, testing, paper-writing, and poster-making. Inspired by my own scuba diving experiences, this project looked at how the thickness of neoprene, a commonly used wetsuit material, affected its heat retention over time in various conditions. Conclusions were drawn based on thermodynamic and fluid-dynamic principles and an understanding of heat transfer through materials and water relating back to thermal and fluids engineering coursework.
