Marine Biology Research Projects in Israel

Project type

Class Research

Date

January 2023

Location

Mevo'ot Yam, Israel

Role

Student Teacher

I spent a month teaching marine biology at a school in Israel. Every day I learned more and more about marine biology as I helped students design class projects. First, we worked with each group on their procedures, identifying variables and necessary materials, then we built the necessary components, carried out testing, and analyzed data. I spent most of my time designing one project in particular, for which the students aimed to measure the consumption of O2 by goldfish while they swam against a current. Hopefully the time I spent with the students in the workshop to create a usable tank design fueled a similar love of hands-on work. Designing and building projects with the kids, I was able to confidently work to positively impact their future. This experience will continue to influence my next teaching adventures, especially knowing that I want to continue working in active settings.

I also assisted the lab professor with various small tasks around the lab spaces, including building an algae bubbler.
