team collaboration, international development, navigating language barriers
As part of a collaborative semester-long project, we partnered with Mujeres Mineras Unidas Por Colombia (MMUC) in Unión Panamericana, Chocó, Colombia. Our objective was to co-design a biodiversity project eligible for the voluntary carbon market, enabling economic diversification and environmental conservation for women miners.
Key activities included a rapid gender analysis to address systemic barriers, stakeholder mapping, and workshops with women miners. Together, we identified agroforestry as a sustainable solution, integrating medicinal plants and timber species into farming systems. This approach aims to empower women miners, enhance biodiversity, and generate income through green jobs and carbon credits.
The project emphasizes gender equity, environmental sustainability, and community-driven transformation, culminating in a January 2025 workshop to finalize implementation plans and empower women leaders to advocate for their vision.
